Class Overview

We learn by "playing" in our kindergarten class. We sing, we dance, and we learn to play wonderful non pitched percussion instruments. We take imaginary trips and we learn many musical concepts along the way like forte/piano, presto/largo, and keeping a steady beat. We also explore our vocal capabilities and learn to follow the conductor. We listen to fabulous music and interpret them on paper by drawing what we hear. There will be a Kindergarten concert on Friday, 5/11/18!

1st GRADE and 2nd GRADE

We have fun by learning the musical language. We begin with reading note and rest values. Then we learn pitched notes. We create catchy phrases for line notes on the staff. My favorite ones that students created from the past years are "Evil Giant Burgers Destroy Fries" and "Every Girl Buys Different Flip-flops." Washington students are super creative! We also sing, dance, and play with many wonderful instruments. Students are great at following the conductor and keeping a steady beat. We are also becoming great listeners as we listen to many wonderful music and learn about the composers. Our Spring Concert is on Friday, 4/27/18!

It's recorder time in 3rd grade! We finally get to put all our musical knowledge to the test. We begin by learning to use proper breathing techniques and fingering. We read musical notes and play them on the recorders. It's awesome to hear the music that we see on paper. Parents: Practicing is very important during this time so please encourage our 3rd graders to practice at home. Our Recorder Concert will be on Friday, 6/15/18!

4th GRADE and 5th GRADE

Washington students are a creative bunch and we begin to prove that by improvising, composing, and working in small groups. We sing, play musical instruments, and record many of our performances on Garage Band so we can listen back for discussion. We also listen to music from classical to pop and realize that many of the popular music use classical techniques. We will use Quaver's Music program to learn more about music notation, create music, and make sountracks. Students can even use their Chromebooks to explore the Quaver's Marvelous World of Music!

Chorus is in full force at 4th and 5th grade. They also have opportunities to learn instruments with our fabulous Mr. Gurick and Mr. Weidman. The best part is that students can join both chorus and instrumental music since they are offered on different days or times. For more information on chorus, please click on the "chorus" tab to your left. For more information on band, please click on the "Activities" tab found on top of our school website.
