Dear Washington Wizards,
This week we began our daily Words of Wisdom and we learned all about what it means to be part of a community. Yesterday, we took time to remember the many brave people, especially firefighters, police officers, and helpers who worked hard to keep others safe on September 11, 2001. They formed a community that day. We honored them by showing kindness, respect, and care for one another. Take a quiet moment this weekend to think about being brave, kind, and helpful every day. Please read below for some updates and reminders.
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
Sincerely,
Kelly O’Brien

Attendance
Please see here for the 2025-2026 student calendar - It's important for students to come to school regularly. We understand that kids might miss a day now and then because they're sick or for other reasons, but coming to school consistently makes a huge difference. Regular attendance is essential to a child's academic and social growth. Students who frequently miss school lose valuable learning time, exposure to class content, and opportunities to develop positive relationships with their classmates.
Wyckoff Board of Education Policy and Regulation #5200 outlines our attendance policies and defines excused and unexcused absences. For cumulative, unexcused absences of ten or more, a pupil between the ages of six and sixteen is truant, according to N.J.S.A. 18A:38.27. Additionally, chronic absenteeism is defined by the New Jersey Department of Education as being absent for 10% or more of the days enrolled during the school year, regardless of whether the absence is excused or unexcused.
Dress Code
As we begin the school year, we’d like to remind everyone of our school dress code expectations. Students should wear clothing that is comfortable, appropriate for learning, and free from distracting images or language. Please see this Policy for the full list. The following garments and articles are prohibited in school and at school-sponsored indoor events:

4th and 5th Grade Extras
Yesterday, 4th and 5th graders had the exciting opportunity to watch Mr. Weidman and Mr. Vetrero introduce a variety of instruments that students can choose to play here at Washington. Be on the look out for a sign up letter if your student is interested in playing an instrument this year.
We are thrilled to announce this year’s Washington School Battle of the Books. Participation is open to all 4th and 5th graders, and it provides an amazing opportunity for students to cultivate a love of reading, discuss books with classmates, build teamwork and confidence, all while having fun and making memories. 4th and 5th grade families, please see this letter to sign up your students.
