⭐ Laying the Foundation: A Message from Mrs. O’Brien
On behalf of the entire Washington School faculty and staff, it is with great joy and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2026–2027 school year! As we begin a new school year, we are excited to start Building Something Great together! September is all about Building Our Foundation by creating the strong sense of community, belonging, and teamwork that will support our students throughout the year. In classrooms and throughout our school, we will work together to establish clear expectations, build positive relationships, and make sure every student feels welcomed, valued, and an important part of our Washington School community. Just as a wizard’s castle needs a strong foundation before it can reach great heights, our school community depends on each of us doing our part, supporting one another, and working as a team. We look forward to laying those first important bricks together and watching something great take shape throughout the year!

🔨 Tools for Success: Reminders for Families
Mark your calendars for our Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 15th! The evening will run from 6:00-8:00 pm. and is is a terrific opportunity to learn about your child's classrooms and teachers, as well as to gain a better understanding of all the wonderful things that they will be doing in school this year.
To help reduce waste, we will no longer be providing single-use utensils in the lunchroom. Please ensure your child brings their own reusable utensils from home each day. in lunch room
We truly value strong communication between home and school! Please keep in mind that our staff also have families and responsibilities outside of school hours. If you send an email after working hours, you may not receive a response until the following school day. Additionally, during the school day, teachers are focused on their students and are not always able to check email. For urgent needs, please contact the main office directly, as they are best able to assist you right away. As always, thank you for your partnership.
As a reminder, no personal electronic devices (phones or watches) are permitted to be used by students during the school day. All personal devices must remain turned off and stored in the student’s backpack. If a student needs to contact home during school hours, they are welcome to use the phone in the Main Office with permission, and parents needing to reach their child should call the Main Office directly.
When a student needs to be released from school early for an unavoidable medical, dental, or other appointment, a note or email from the parent/guardian explaining the reason should be sent to the teacher on that day. The parent must come into the vestibule to sign out the student. Except in the case of a rare emergency, parents may not sign children out of school between 3:00 and 3:20 P.M. as our office is hectic at that time, ensuring a safe dismissal for all. Early dismissal is strongly discouraged, as it disrupts the classroom learning environment and compromises your child’s instruction.
Per the Wyckoff Board of Education Dress Code Policy - Students should wear clothing that is comfortable, appropriate for learning, and free from distracting images or language. Please see this Policy for the full list. The following garments and articles are prohibited in school:
Extremely low-cut, tight fitting or transparent clothes, bare midriffs, and suggestive clothing;
Skirts, dresses, and pants that end higher than mid-thigh;
Outdoor jackets, coats, or hats except when entering or leaving the building and when there is a defect in the heating system
Bare feet, unsafe footwear, cleated shoes, and footwear intended for the beach;
Patches and decorations that are offensive or obscene;
Undershirts (underwear) worn without an outer shirt;
In the classroom, clothing required for physical education classes;
Clothing that is overly soiled, torn, worn, or defaced;
Nonprescription sunglasses, glazed, and tinted glasses, except as prescribed by the student's doctor;
Portable audio or video devices;
Beepers and other summoning devices, except as permitted in Policy No. 2360;
Clothing, apparel and/or accessories which indicate affiliation with any gang associated with criminal activity or have references to alcohol, controlled dangerous substances, or tobacco;
Clothing containing profanity or sexual references or innuendoes;
Clothing which includes racial or ethnic violence;
Hats, hoods, visors, headbands and other headgear; and
Any clothing that is likely to create a material and substantial disruption to the school environment.
